Trip Overview

The Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek is a 30 day remote trekking journey that connects the hidden valleys of Upper Dolpo with the historic region of Upper Mustang. During this journey you will pass through some of the least visited landscapes of Nepal, where traditional lifestyle and mountain culture are still strongly preserved. The trail passes through high mountain passes, remote settlements and ancient monasteries as it slowly moves from the Dolpo region to the Mustang plateau.

The Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek Nepal is organized by Himalayan Pathways with a carefully planned schedule that allows gradual altitude gain and proper acclimatization. The journey starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then another scenic flight to Juphal, which is the main gateway to the Dolpo region. From Juphal you will follow trails that lead through traditional villages, narrow river valleys and quiet mountain paths that lead towards the deep valleys of Dolpo.

One of the important experiences of the trek is the visit to Shey Phoksundo Lake. Here you will spend some time around a serene alpine lake surrounded by high cliffs and quiet mountain scenery. The path then heads towards Shey Gompa, which is one of the oldest monasteries in the Dolpo region. In this area you will get the opportunity to see the traditional way of life of local communities and the strong influence of Tibetan Buddhist and Bon traditions that continue to shape daily life.

As the path proceeds, the trail slowly follows ancient trading routes which once linked Dolpo with Mustang and Tibet. During this section of the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang Trek you will pass through remote villages such as Tinje and Charka where local people still follow traditional ways of living. The landscape gradually changes as you get closer to the Mustang region with its wide valleys and its dry mountain terrain.

The last section of the trek is the approach to Lo Manthang, the old walled city of Upper Mustang. Here you will explore the old monasteries, old traditional houses and the culture of Mustang region. The trek then proceeds further to Muktinath and ultimately to Jomsom where your trek ends before flying back to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

The Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek Itinerary usually takes around thirty days and is considered a challenging camping trek due to its remote trails and high mountain passes. If you enjoy long treks in the remote Himalayas, this trek will provide a meaningful travel experience that includes nature, culture and traditional mountain life.

Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek- 30 Days Itinerary

Today we will begin the journey for the Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The flight takes about an hour and slowly approaches the hills surrounding Kathmandu to the flat plains of western Nepal. Nepalgunj is an important transit city for trekkers taking the trips to remote areas of western Nepal. Once we arrive we will transfer to the hotel and take some time to rest.

In the afternoon we will check our trekking equipment and get ready for the mountain flight we are scheduled to make the following morning. Our guide will also give a short briefing regarding route, safety and trekking schedule. This preparation day is helpful for us to organize everything before entering the remote region of Dolpo.

How Difficult Is the Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek?

The Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek is considered a challenging trek because it crosses remote mountain regions and several high altitude passes. During this journey we typically cover 5 to 7 hours daily (mixed terrain consisting of rocky trails, narrow valleys, and high mountain passes). The highest point of the trek rises up to about 5,445 meters, where the atmosphere is thinner and the weather may be colder.

The route from Upper Dolpo to Mustang is remote and facilities are limited to other trekking areas. Good physical fitness, patience and mental preparation are helpful to get this journey done. With proper acclimatization and steady pacing, trekkers with strong trekking experience can complete the Upper Dolpo to Upper Mustang Trek safely and comfortably.

Weather and Best Season

The best seasons for the Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek are spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October). During these months the weather is usually stable and the mountain views are clearer. Temperatures during the day are quite comfortable for trekking, although mornings and evenings may be cold at higher altitudes.

Spring provides nice weather and greener valleys in the lower Dolpo area. Autumn is another good time because the skies are generally clear during the monsoon season. Winter months from November to April can bring heavy snow at the high passes making the traveling difficult. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the Dolpo Mustang Traverse Trek Nepal. Some parts of Upper Mustang lie in a rain shadow area, but overall weather and flight conditions are usually more reliable in spring and autumn.
